Actress-musician Eszter Balint has trekked through offbeat terrain before, having starred 21 years ago in director Jim Jarmusch’s oddball indie film Stranger Than Paradise. On the quirky Mud — the follow-up to her 1999 country-folk effort, Flicker — she sings of shady predicaments, her low, cool vocals mingling with twangy strings and echoing vibraphones. The album’s unhurried pace offers little variety, but the occasional squirts of brusque guitar noise give it some bite.
