Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts, and RenĂ©e Zellweger were among the stars winning praise for their retro-glam fashion choices at Sunday night’s Oscars. Theron and Watts each wore sparkly, flesh-tone gowns; the former from Gucci, the latter from Versace. ”It’s the Oscars and there’s so much tradition, I wanted to go old school glamour,” Watts told the Associated Press. Best Supporting Actress winner Zellweger wore what AP called a ”strapless column gown with a draped bodice and back bow” from Carolina Herrera; she accessorized with nearly $1 million worth of jewelry.

Nicole Kidman’s backless, light-green, satin Chanel dress and Liv Tyler’s black Givenchy gown were also singled out for praise. Meanwhile, Best Actress nominee Diane Keaton’s choice of an a Ralph Lauren suit in vintage ”Annie Hall” style took some criticism. ”How far back into her closet did she dig?” wrote a Philadelphia Inquirer critic. Scarlett Johannson’s green gown from Alberto Ferretti also got mixed reviews.

But overall, fashion mavens were impressed by the stars’ efforts. ”It’s kind of incredible how retro glam the whole thing is,” Glamour magazine editor-in-chief Cindi Leive told AP. ”There was nothing rock and roll.” Unless you count singer Alison Krauss’ $2 million, diamond-encrusted slippers.
