Love Monkey

Posted on

This relentlessly cynical novel from Smith (an editor at PEOPLE) trots out a familiar hero: the neurotic New Yorker whose sarcasm hides an underlying romanticism. But the hilarious sexual misadventures of self-proclaimed ”manboy” Tom Farrell feel more refreshing than rehashed. Tom is a Gen-X (”the Lamest Generation”) tabloid editor whose sharply observed musings about the love lives of well-heeled Gothamites compensate for his own considerable pain. (”Living in New York, you really have to learn to love having your heart broken.”) ”Monkey,” like the paper Tom writes for, is loud and brash, but a helluva lot of fun.
