We gave it a B
The women who shoot, seduce, and drink their way through these moody, loosely intertwined stories are all cops on the Baton Rouge Police Department, where first-time author Drummond once worked. Cathy becomes a cop because she grew up addicted to ”Hill Street Blues;” Mona wants to emulate her brutal policeman father; Sarah just likes the clarity of a crime scene: ”It’s pure fact. It’s done. Inarguable.” But they’re deeply ambivalent about their work, haunted by the faces of the people they find murdered or smashed up on the interstate. The collection is uneven — a few stories have little or no plot — but the best are tough, scary, and riveting.
