Oprah Bless 'America'

Posted on

Speaking of gift books, the most popular this season could be ”America 24/7,” a collection of 1,200 digital photos taken during one week in May by you, America. Oprah named it one of her ”Favorite Things” on Nov. 24; naturally, it’s a No. 9 debut on this week’s list. Fun feature: If you mail in your own pic and an extra $5.99, they’ll mail you back your own customized cover in two weeks. Fun fact: Thirty percent of the people who’ve ordered special covers have sent in photos of their dogs, says a book rep.

NEW IN PAPERBACK

NOTES FROM MY TRAVELS Angelina Jolie (Pocket, $14) ”I am forever changed,” writes the Tomb Raider. This is the diary of her world travels to hot spots like Pakistan, Cambodia, and Tanzania as a U.N. goodwill ambassador.

JARHEAD Anthony Swofford (Scribner, $14) Swofford, a former Marine, hit the literary scene like a Scud with this searing memoir of the first Gulf War.

FINDERS KEEPERS Mark Bowden (Grove, $13) You saw the John Cusack movie. Well, since it was 1993’s poorly received Money for Nothing, maybe you didn’t. The book — the true story of a guy who finds $1.2 million on the street — is terrific.
