Neo finally died last week — by choking on a candy cane. Again proving that a second weekend can be more important than the first in understanding a movie’s performance, the Will Ferrell comedy Elf capitalized on its wide appeal, moving into the top spot with $26.3 million, while The Matrix Revolutions dropped a disastrous 66 percent to No. 3. Russell Crowe’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World bowed at second place with a shipshape $25.1 million (but let’s see what happens in week 2). And wrapping up a tough week for Warner Bros., Looney Tunes: Back in Action took in just $9.3 million, a reminder that, sometimes, all it takes is one weekend to tank.
