Our box office roundup’s last look at the herd of summer movies (#723, Aug. 15) elicited yee-haws and cries about Hollywood’s wee flaws. ”EW, you did it again!” cheers Lorenz Esguerra of Plymouth, Minn. ”Your summer box office report is right on target. I especially agree with your five reasons a movie sucked or succeeded.” Christopher Drake of Lakewood, Colo., thinks he knows why the season seemed so shocking: ”The real problem this summer and every summer is that the substance of a studio’s product has taken second position to the business of the product. The studio’s apparent motivation is not to make great movies but to make movies that open great.” Also on the great front, TV fans applauded our writer’s ability to make even unwatchable shows enjoyable. ”I just watched (or attempted to watch) Red Water; Dalton Ross’ review cracked me up,” says Susan Block of Marshfield, Wis. ”Keep up the sarcasm, a technique that is widely underused.” Consider your wish granted.
I love a good old popcorn flick as much as the next moviegoer, but too much popcorn can clog the arteries. I wish moviemakers would, for one summer, stop pandering to every single immature, ill-mannered teenager in the country. Time was when summer blockbusters took the form of E.T., The Empire Strikes Back, or Raiders of the Lost Arkmovies that were original, appealed to a wide audience, and were not afraid to take emotional risks amid the spectacular visuals and fantastic concepts. This article was a pretty accurate portrayal of the current excess of trash being pumped out by the movie industry. Is there anyone left in Hollywood who has an original thought? They’ve proven that money is the only goal. Not only is quality not secondary, it’s not even part of the equation.
