Las Vegas may be the only place where Elton John’s frequent concert attire — feather boas, platform shoes, glittery eyewear, and sequins galore — is considered understated. Billboard reports that he may be taking up semi-permanent residence there, as he’s in talks to follow Celine Dion’s three-year engagement at Caesar’s Palace with a simiarly long headlining gig of his own there, a deal that would pay him $54 million.
The 56-year-old rocker would play the Colosseum, the arena built for Dion’s current $100 million run. John’s deal would presumably call for him to play just twice a week, at least at first, since he’d start next year, while Dion will still be fulfilling her five-nights-a-week contract. John, whose current tour with Billy Joel is one of this year’s most lucrative road shows, would get to stay in one place, as he would play exclusively at Caesar’s.
Other top acts are beginning to try out the Colosseum, albeit for much shorter runs. This weekend, Tim McGraw will play the 4,100-seat venue, while Mariah Carey is booked there next weekend, and Gloria Estefan will hold down the fort for nine days in October.
