Now that ”Chicago” has saved the movie musical from extinction, everyone wants to be in one. The next all-star musical will be ”Just One of Those Things,” a biopic about Broadway songwriting legend Cole Porter, and it will feature some of today’s top pop and jazz singers performing classic Porter tunes. Elvis Costello will croon ”Let’s Misbehave,” fiancée Diana Krall will perform the movie’s title tune and ”I Get a Kick Out of You,” Sheryl Crow will sing ”Begin the Beguine,” Alanis Morissette will perform ”Let’s Do It,” and Robbie Williams will offer ”Love for Sale.”
”’These are some of the world’s top musical talents,” said ”Life as a House” director Irwin Winkler, who’ll direct Porter’s life as a musical. ”We’re thrilled to have them in our film. By lending their voices to some of the most spectacular music ever written, we’ll be able to introduce the genius of Cole Porter to a whole new generation of fans,” Winkler said in a statement. ”House” star Kevin Kline will play Porter, and Ashley Judd will play his wife and muse, Linda Lee Porter. The screenplay, by longtime Martin Scorsese collaborator Jay Cocks (”Gangs of New York”), will delve into Porter’s complex relationship with Linda; even though Porter was gay, he was devoted to her and never wrote another song after she died. Kline will sing several Porter numbers as well, and even Judd, who’s always shied away from capitalizing on her own family’s musical legacy, will sing a couple. Maybe she can get mom Naomi and sister Wynonna to coach her.
