Holy Road

Posted on

In the mood for bland folk-pop sprinkled with yodeling and spoken-word? Then pick up the debut from this self-proclaimed ”Brooklyn artist/poet/singer-songwriter.” Melodically unimaginative and reminiscent of a watered-down Natalie Merchant, Road is an example of that increasingly common phenomenon — heavily hyped and utterly forgettable. West deserves praise for deftly incorporating passages from D.H. Lawrence into ”Prayer” and for the stirring gospel vibe of ”See You Through.” Ultimately, however, Road is best left untraveled.
