The halftime marching-band blowouts made famous by traditionally African-American universities like Morris Brown College (which struts its stuff here) provide the booming backdrop for Drumline‘s otherwise overplayed plot. A financially strained wunderkind (Nick Cannon) gets a scholarship to do his drum thang but must overcome his cockiness before he can succeed. Showing the same flair of his ”Whassup” ads, director Charles Stone III jazzes up the film’s more predictable moments with an energy that’s hard to beat.
