‘HEAD’ TRIPS

After three straight weeks at No. 1 and a $100 million gross, Bringing Down the House finally ceded the top spot to the Chris Rock-Bernie Mac newcomer Head of State, which opened at $13.5 million. While The Core and Basic opened to so-so numbers, Oscar- winning films enjoyed a major boost: Best Picture Chicago leaped 17 percent to $144.7 million, triple victor The Pianist jumped 138 percent, and Spirited Away, rereleased after its Best Animated Feature win, soared a mind-blowing 35,132 percent from No. 89 to No. 15.
