The Dead announce a summer tour

The Dead announce a summer tour. Willie Nelson and Steve Winwood will join the band’s first major excursion since Jerry Garcia died

Posted on

Time to pull that tie-dye out of the closet and whip up a batch of burritos. The Dead are touring this summer for the first time as a group since frontman Jerry Garcia died eight years ago. Accompanying the band on its ”Summer Getaway” tour will be Willie Nelson and classic rocker Steve Winwood (whose first album in six years, the aptly titled ”About Time,” is due in June), according to an itinerary the Dead released this week.

While the surviving members have toured together and separately as The Other Ones in recent years, they didn’t all perform onstage together until a reunion show last year in Wisconsin. In February, they decided to ditch that moniker and reclaim The Dead, retiring the ”Grateful” in homage to Garcia.

The first leg of the ”Summer Getaway” Tour kicks of June 15 at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn., with Winwood joining the Dead for the first eight dates. Nelson will take his place on nine dates from June 27 to July 8, including Nelson’s traditional July 4th Picnic show in Austin, Texas. Latter-day jam band moe. will join Nelson and the Dead on June 29 in Vernon, N.Y. Other opening acts are yet to be announced, as are dates on the second leg of the tour, from July 29 to August 10. Ticket information is available at the Dead’s website.
