Anastacia undergoes breast cancer surgery

Posted on

Rising pop star Anastacia, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in January, underwent seven hours of surgery on Feb. 10 to remove the tumor and reconstruct her breast, her doctor said on Monday. Early detection saved the 29-year-old’s life, Dr. Alexander Swistel said in a statement. Anastacia has since been recuperating at home in New York and is expected to begin six weeks of radiation therapy shortly.

”Although what Anastacia has is serious, she is very lucky,” Dr. Swistel said. ”Due to the aggressive nature of her cancer, she was months away from a more immediate life-threatening condition. However, her prognosis is good, as are her spirits, which figures into any patient’s successful recovery.”

”My will, my faith, and my body have been challenged,” the singer said in a statement. ”But make no mistake, my heart is strong and my resolve to fight will never be broken.” She thanked fans for their support and urged women to get mammograms early. ”Even if not covered by insurance, give up that pair of shoes, don’t go out for that expensive dinner — get a mammogram.”
