The less slick Nelson sounds the better. So it’s a gift to hear these unearthed, rough songwriting demos, cut from 1960 to ’66, when the young buck was pushing tunes in Nashville. Best are the first eight tracks, featuring Nelson croaking alone with his scratchy acoustic guitar. The other seven pair him with a band, but they still don’t sound like his too-sweet official ’60s recordings; rather, they capture this country ”outlaw” in his kicking infancy.
