Those of us who spent the holiday week watching MTV’s countdown of 2002’s top videos — and the inevitable endless reruns thereof — had plenty of trends to ponder. Once again, Misspellings ”R” In, with Nelly’s and Christina’s bonus r’s. There were cred boosters, like the White Stripes and the Vines, who had hits only on MTV because radio didn’t share the net’s good taste. There were cred shredders, like ”Dirrty,” that were hits only on MTV because radio didn’t share their awful taste. Then there were the toned, bare bellies of stars who held to last year’s resolutions about diet, exercise, and, possibly, lipo. May we all be so steadfast — and fabulous — in 2003.
