THE CHART

SWAN SONGS

Better dead than defiant. At least, that’s how the public voted when it came to the week’s debuting divas. Aaliyah’s posthumous two-CD set, I Care 4 U, came in at No. 3, selling 280,000 copies to top Whitney Houston’s Just Whitney…, which entered at No. 9 on sales of 205,000. Houston didn’t seem to gain much sales momentum from her testy Diane Sawyer interview, but TV did wonders for other gals. The Dixie Chicks took a leap to No. 2 and sold 295,000 after a concert special. And Norah Jones had SNL to thank for her best sales week yet, moving 170,000 units. Shania took a tube respite but remained the Uberdiva, placing another 373,000 Up!s with people.
