It’s easy to see why the White Stripes love these Ohio ga-rage boys: ”Mono,” the Greenhornes’ third CD, sounds like a lost classic from a hot circa-’66 white soul band. The absence of organist Jared McKinney (previously thought to be the band’s secret weapon) stings, but only until the tunes — and they’re good ‘uns — kick in. And the subtle psychedelic touches (yep, that’s a harpsichord on ”Don’t Come Running to Me”) remind you that, figuratively speaking, 1967 is just around the corner.
