What’s your reaction to people telling you ”You aren’t a punk”? –Liv, Adelaide, South Australia
I KNOW I’m not a punk. You’d never see anyone who’s hardcore punk on MTV. They’re against all that stuff. No one actually comes up to me and says, ”You’re not punk!” But if they did, I’d be like, ”I never f—ing said I was!”
Who inspires you musically? –Laura Anderson, Kalamazoo
There was never any one person in particular growing up, but music that inspires me is stuff like Goo Goo Dolls, System of a Down, Matchbox 20, Green Day, Sum 41, and Blink 182. I LOVE the Goo Goo Dolls. When I sit there and listen to their CD, it really touches me and reminds me why I do what I’m doing. I’m like, ”Oh my god, I’m so lucky to be doing what I’m doing.”
What caused your transition from country to rock? –Samantha H., Wheaton, Ill.
Music’s music and I love to sing. I wanted to sing anywhere and everywhere I could, so I’d sing at fairs, and you had to sing country songs. No, I didn’t enjoy them, but I had to. That’s what I did to sing. I don’t regret it.
This might be stupid, but do you play hockey? –Sarah Pepper, Hazlet N.J.
Not anymore because I’m on the road, but I did play when I lived at home [in Napanee, Ontario]. I was right wing and sometimes center. I got MVP for two years in a row. One time I beat up a goalie. My dad has that on video. The guy took his glove and smacked me, and I was like, ”Whoa!” I pushed him into the net, he punched me, I punched him. It was awesome.
What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done? –Kirsten P., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.
Me and a friend went to a really high bridge and decided to jump off. We had no idea if there were rocks on the bottom or how deep it was. It was really far. We were like, ”Let’s just do it!” We jumped. I screamed and when I hit the water I was like, ”I’m alive!”
What is your middle name? A lot of people are starting to think you don’t have one. –Ashleigh Nunez, Sacramento
I’m not telling! I don’t like it. It starts with an R. I don’t know why I don’t like it. But I’m not telling. I think middle names are funny. They’re pointless. Pointless!
If you got any more piercings, where would they be? –Lynzi Moore, Chattanooga
I was gonna get one on my lip, but I decided not to because I think it would get in the way of kissing a guy. Plus, I’m thinking, Okay, when I’m 40 I don’t want this huge hole in my lip. I would never do my tongue. Never. Maybe one day I’ll get a tatoo, but I don’t think I will because I always change my mind. I had so many tattoo ideas and I was like, Yeah, let’s go do this now, but then I’m like, Wait, be safe, think about it for a year and see if you still want it. Then like two months later I’m like, Oh my God I’m so glad I didn’t do it!
