‘GOLD’ STANDARD

Austin Powers in Goldmember swung to the best July opening ever, the best comedy opening ever, and the best opening in New Line’s history. But for almost everyone else not named Robert Evans ($22,272 per screen for The Kid Stays in the Picture), the weekend wasn’t exactly shagadelic: Reign of Fire flamed, K-19 dove, and The Country Bears bearly missed the top five with a grizzly $5.3 million. On a happier note, Greek Wedding celebrated its best frame yet, returning to the top ten 15 weeks into its phenomenal run.
