HALF IN LOVE Maile Meloy (Scribner, $23) A young soldier woos and torments a shell-shocked English girl the night before he goes to war. A child’s funeral song reveals a dead man’s secret. A yuppie couple tries to persuade an ailing octogenarian to part with his valuable sandstone. Full of portent, Meloy’s short stories reveal characters on the edge of death, divorce, despair, and redemption. The topics can be dark, but the tone is often hopeful; the themes may be grand, but the action is everyday. Anchoring it all is Meloy’s assured prose, probing the minds of Montana ranch girls and retired Frenchmen with astounding aplomb.
