ARCLIGHT HOLLYWOOD (Los Angeles)
Multiplexes get a good name thanks to this state-of-the-art complex on Sunset Boulevard. It houses 14 stadium-style screens, as well as the refurbished 1963 Cinerama Dome, and features an elegant bar/cafe in the lobby, all-reserved seating, no annoying ads before the movie, ushers versed in Tarantino-esque esoterica, and, if you’re tired of plain old popcorn, empanadas with watermelon barbecue sauce. Fast becoming a hot spot for celeb-hosted premieres (Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, Jodie Foster).
AMOEBA MUSIC (Los Angeles)
The Bay Area indie mini-chain has descended on Sunset (right next door to ArcLight). The 42,000 square feet boast everything from a huge used-jazz section to one quarter of a million vinyl discs for music junkies like Mike Myers, Lauren Ambrose, Gillian Anderson, and Marilyn Manson. And yes, they have eight-tracks.
CARDIO STRIPTEASE AT CRUNCH FITNESS (Los Angeles)
Members line up to watch Carmen Electra and former ”Baywatch” babe Angelica Bridges give their inner pole dancer a workout at Jeff Costa’s R-rated weekly bump and grind. Classes are popping up at Crunch in New York City and Miami, and Costa will offer a video/DVD for fall (jeffreycosta.com). ”I’m working on getting the Olsen twins to come,” he says wistfully. Who wouldn’t?
BRUNCH AND BEAUTY ON THIRD STREET (Los Angeles)
On weekend mornings celeb royalty queue up like commoners for cholesterol-lowering junk food at two sidewalk cafés: Julia Roberts and Renée Zellweger flock to Quality; Selma Blair and Jason Schwartzman have been spotted eating blueberry flaxseed griddle cakes at Doughboys. Just along the fashionable boulevard you’ll find Clark Nova, where former skate punk Hector Rodriguez produces cuts and blow-outs so sexy they should be X-rated, and the Parlour, where colorist Steven Tapp and stylist Corey Powell are giving tips and streaks to Cameron Diaz, Naomi Watts, and Ricky Martin.
RUNYON CANYON PARK (Los Angeles)
It’s been around forever, but its steep hiking trails right in Hollywood remain the de rigueur destination for canine-owning celebs. See Debra Messing, Drew Barrymore, Cheri Oteri, Eric McCormack, Robbie Williams, and Sheryl Crow burn their quads, work their cell phones, and cool their dawgs.
