Will Smith and Halle Berry won favorite actor and actress at the BET Awards Tuesday night, while singer/songwriter India.Arie finally won an award after going home empty-handed at the Grammys, Soul Train Awards, and NAACP Image Awards, according to published reports. Arie won best female R&B singer, beating out her former Grammy rival Alicia Keys, who took home best new artist Tuesday. ”I answer all disappointment and negativity with a song — and a smile,” Arie told Reuters, reflecting on her her past losses.
Seventies R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire won a lifetime achievement award, while Will Smith presented Muhammad Ali with a humanitarian prize. Atlanta hip-hop duo OutKast won best music group and Busta Rhymes’ guest star-laden ”Pass the Courvoisier, Part II” took home video of the year. The second annual BET Awards were broadcast live from Hollywood’s Kodak Theater, with Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer hosting.
The evening had one tense moment when Snoop Dogg and his companions ran into his estranged former label head Suge Knight and his Death Row posse; the two groups engaged in a ”brief stand-off,” according to Reuters. Nothing came of the run-in, however.
