In the movie ”Uptown Girl,” currently shooting in New York, Jennifer Lopez stars as a woman of modest origins who has a Cinderella romance with a wealthy European man, played by Ralph Fiennes. Just days after her separation from husband Cris Judd was first reported, Lopez and Fiennes appeared together offscreen as well: The New York Post published a photo of the couple embracing after having dinner together at a downtown New York restaurant.
Lopez’s spokesman Alan Nierob had ”no comment” when EW.com called to ask about Lopez’s personal life, but Fiennes’ spokeswoman, Catherine Olin, told the Post that rumors of romance between the actors was ”utter nonsense.” Explaining the photo, Olin said, ”I assume they were just saying goodbye.”
Fiennes, who is divorced from ”ER” star Alex Kingston, has been in a long-term relationship with actress Francesca Annis, while Lopez — as was widely reported last Friday — is separating from dancer/choreographer Judd, her husband of nine months. The Associated Press quoted a source at the time as saying that there was no third party involved in the split, and indeed, Sean ”P. Diddy” Combs and Ben Affleck both denied this week’s rumors that J. Lo is dating either of them.
Affleck and Lopez costarred earlier this year in an action comedy called ”Gigli,” due to be released next year. After the shoot wrapped, Affleck took out a full-page ad in Variety praising Lopez, and he was one of the guests at the opening of her Pasadena restaurant, Madre’s, in April.
They will also costar as a married couple in ”Jersey Girl” for writer/director Kevin Smith, a movie that will shoot in Philadelphia this summer. ”Are they dating? Unequivocally, no,” Smith told the Philadelphia Inquirer this week, though he did not say whether Affleck and Lopez had dated in the past. Affleck told TV’s Extra this week that he and Lopez are ”only friends.”
