KNOCKOUT PERFORMANCE

Sometimes, the video world just doesn’t make much sense. In a week that saw the debut of the Oscar-nominated Ali–with Will Smith giving the performance of his career as arguably the greatest athlete ever to walk the earth–video renters turned in their scorecards and gave the victory to Not Another Teen Movie (which, despite its title, is just that). Still, the champ can’t be counted out: Ali dominates the disc sales chart. Float like a butterfly, sting like a DVD.

ANGELINA BALLERINA: ROSE FAIRY PRINCESS Animated (HIT, A unrated) Terrific toddler fare that tells the tale of an enchanting English mouse.

LANTANA Anthony LaPaglia (Lions Gate, R) In a mystery that A plays out like an Altman film, LaPaglia stuns as an Aussie detective on the hunt.

COMING UP

HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE (Warner, PG) Listen, if you need to be told what this movie is about, then you’re reading the wrong magazine.

HYPE WILLIAMS: THE VIDEOS (Palm, unrated) Wiggle it, just a little bit, to these music vids from artists like Busta Rhymes, TLC, and Jay-Z.

SLACKERS (Columbia TriStar, R) Rushmore’s Jason Schwartzman makes it all the way to college in a movie that could’ve used some Max Fischer flair.

STARSHIP TROOPERS: SPECIAL EDITION (Columbia TriStar, R, DVD) Paul Verhoeven’s weirdo sci-fi satire gets a deluxe treatment. Would you like to know more?

TRAFFIC: special edition (Criterion, R, DVD) Director Steven Soderbergh usually takes full advantage of the power of DVD, so this two-disc set should rock.
