The title suggests horses, Montana, and long, lingering prose about birthing calves. And while McGuane’s beautifully turned novel does feature these noisy saws, it remains a surprising, affecting mix of bitterness and delicacy. Jim Whitelaw — family patriarch and cunning bastard — dies, leaving his clan in knots over his will, which dictates that his daughter must stay with her snaky husband if everyone wants to liquidate the family bottling plant. Squabbling over money and plumbing long-hidden family history, the Whitelaws are the picture of desperation — quiet, comic, terrible, and otherwise — and Cadence rides high on their absurdities and probes satisfyingly deep into their darknesses.
