We gave it a B
If artistic promise has a life span, then director Barbet Schroeder’s career — now a decade removed from Reversal of Fortune — kicked the bucket a while ago. Which makes Assassins something of a comeback. Daringly shooting his film on the bloodied streets of Medellin, Colombia (and on hi-def video), Schroeder centers on a writer’s quest for spirituality while trolling the ravaged city with his casually murderous teenage lovers. The drama is often forced and stagy, but it’s still an intimate portrait of a vividly uncivilized world.
