We gave it a B-

Koster’s last book mapped out the tentacles of Texas Music. His latest obsession is the swamp state, the lush breeding ground of musicians like Louis Armstrong, Buckwheat Zydeco, and, yes, Britney Spears. Koster has gathered his often loose reporting — ”One fairly sloshed JazzFest afternoon, probably in 1991, I was wandering aimlessly and wound up in the off-limits backstage of a performance tent….” — and thrown in some great record recommendations. On one of Louisiana’s piano legends: ”There’s not much else to say about Professor Longhair other than listen to the music.” So why am I reading this?
