David Benioff recommends The Water-Method Man by John Irving (Ballantine, $6.99).
Before The World According to Garp made him famous, John Irving wrote The Water-Method Man. My sister gave it to me. She named her cat after the book’s hero, Bogus. I never liked the cat but I loved the book. Irving got better (he was only 30 when this one was published), but The Water-Method Man is the funniest novel he’s written. Some scenes are so insanely funny I’m laughing now, remembering pages I read 11 years ago. For sheer pleasure, I’d rank this book with Lucky Jim and The Ginger Man.
David Benioff is the author of The 25th Hour, which Plume just published in paperback.
