We gave it an A

A celluloid version of the annual yak caravan across the Himalayas to trade Tibetan salt for Nepalese grain, director Eric Valli’s Oscar nominee for best foreign film offers spectacular scenery (nine months on location), with pared-down-to-its-essentials cinema (amateur actors, no makeup). Incorporating a tale of the old guard — in this case an aging village chief — resisting an inevitable takeover by the new, Valli’s paean to a land he’s lived in for two decades headily renders a disappearing culture, and the stellar camera work captures each and every wind-carved facial crevice.
