We gave it an A

Set in a bizarro alternative version of the year 1985 in which Britain is still fighting a war in the Crimea and literary manuscripts are as valuable as state secrets, The Eyre Affair imagines a bookish world that’s anything but wimpy: There’s a rowdy cult of Baconians (as in Francis), an inordinate number of people named John Milton, and Rocky Horror-ish interactive productions of Shakespeare plays. Thursday Next is a LiteraTec (literary detective) assigned to recover the stolen manuscript of Charles Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit, but things really go awry when Jane Eyre turns up missing. Packed with ingenious ideas, The Eyre Affair will send readers scurrying back to the classics and looking forward to the next Next adventure (which is due in 2003).
