We gave it a B
Thrillers set against the moon-cold of Minnesota now seem as boilerplate as fedoras and dangling cigarettes, but Stillwater, Minn., native Logan catches something primal that others have missed — the unremitting danger of the deep freeze. Ex-cop Phil Broker leads three yuppies on a near-deadly moose hunt that leaves one of them foundering in glacial waters and then in a coma of dubious origin. Shortly, our aging hero tallies up suspects: the saucy nurse, the unstable surgeon, the buxom wife, her oily computer-nerd ex, and his lap-dance-loving thug. It’s seriously macho stuff — especially when you throw in the killer ostrich — that’s tempered by frostbitten prose and snappy pacing. In its best moments, Logan’s writing causes more shivers than snow on skin.
