Forget the usual awards-show glitz and glam. The 2001 MTV Movie Awards, taped June 2 (and aired June 7), was more about pasties and pee. Lil’ diva Lil’ Kim — who joined Pink, Mya, and Christina Aguilera in a fiery performance of ”Lady Marmalade” from Moulin Rouge — was barely dressed in daisy-shaped pasties on the red carpet (actually, it was gold shag). ”I designed it,” she boasted. And Saturday Night Live’s Will Ferrell, offering relaxation tips to Best Comedic Performance winner Ben Stiller (Meet the Parents), wet his pants. On stage.

But some of the best moments at the 10th-anniversary telecast were surprisingly tame. Swordfish’s Halle Berry, miffed at reports she’d received an extra $500,000 to appear topless in the flick, demanded an ounce of flesh from costars John Travolta and Hugh Jackman, who obliged with a PG-rated striptease that revealed only their bellies. And MTV favorite Jim Carrey — who earned his ninth Golden Popcorn statue, for Best Villain in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas — turned the volume to zero. He accepted in silence (a prerecorded speech filled L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium as Carrey mimicked telepathy).

Clairvoyance might have helped a humble Julia Stiles, who was backstage voicing gloom about her award prospects. ”I don’t have a chance,” said the perky 20-year-old. While she lost Best Actress honors to Erin Brockovich’s Julia Roberts, she and Save the Last Dance costar Sean Patrick Thomas scored in the only-at-MTV category Best Kiss, licking the likes of Tom Hanks and Wilson the volleyball in Cast Away. The trophy was nice, but Thomas seemed more interested in stargazing. ”I’m seeing a whole lot of people I’d like to meet,” he said. ”Mya and Beyonce, I am available!”
