Movie Review: 'Sweet Nothings'

Posted on

With cupid readying his aim, love reigned supreme at the box office, and it was the sweet depiction of romance that beat the dark and bitter version as Jennifer Lopez’s The Wedding Planner edged out the holiday-themed slasher flick Valentine for the top spot. Meanwhile, loverboy Freddie Prinze Jr. got jilted with the debut of his tooth-decaying crush comedy Head Over Heels, opening at No. 7 with a less than heart-pounding $4.8 million. The big news of the week, however, is the gravity-defying run of Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Adding 295 theaters in its ninth week, the Mandarin martial-arts extravaganza soared to $53 million — putting it within striking distance of Life Is Beautiful‘s $57.6 million record as the highest-grossing foreign-language film ever released in the U.S.
