We gave it a C+

A baffling ritualistic murder involving bondage and an ornamental owl prompts the LAPD to seek out retired FBI profiler Terry McCaleb, who quickly makes a connection between the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and an avenging- angel cop named … Harry Bosch. Connelly’s 10th novel is his first to team recurring heroes McCaleb (Blood Work) and Bosch (Trunk Music); alas, he marks the occasion with a mystery that’s preposterous, and worse, obvious; a kinky subplot about a movie director gives everything away too soon. What should have been his most inspired yarn yet is perfunctory and formulaic. Bosch and McCaleb — compelling creations — deserve better. C+
