MTV Weekend

Posted on

Save the Last Dance did a victory pirouette at the box office as audiences opted for a bit of cheese over all the Oscar haute cuisine. A coproduction with MTV, the Julia Stiles two-stepper racked up $27 million over the four-day holiday weekend. Accompanied by heavy promotion on the music network, Dance fell well short of Titanic‘s MLK weekend record of $36 million, but did help set a new aggregate mark for this holiday’s top 10: $135 million. MGM’s AntiTrust opened at a weak number 12, but the studio’s long-running cold streak should become a thing of the past when its next flick — the Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal — hits theaters on Feb. 9.
