We gave it a C
The author of ”Waiting to Exhale” and ”How Stella Got Her Groove Back” is an absolutely infuriating writer. Why would a woman blessed with such a strong voice waste her time on screechy — albeit best selling — drivel? In her latest saga, A Day Late and a Dollar Short, the author is at her most frustrating as she recounts the troubles of the Prices, a middle class clan battling alcoholism, incest, and general angst.
When McMillan chooses to mute her characters’ high pitched theatrics about quotidian life, she nails emotional moments and family truths with perfect pitch and poignancy. But far too often we have to wade through mucky variations of ”Why do men always seem to do what… they want… without any regard [for] the women who do everything for them?” Girl, set his car on fire already and get on with it.
