Tallahassee journo Date has been called a disciple of fellow Florida satirist Carl Hiaasen, and this wrongheadedly farcical rendering of the Sunshine State’s historic battle against Big Tobacco does have a lot in common with Striptease — the movie, that is. Like that turkey, Smokeout confuses caricature with characterization, exults witlessly in its own prurience, and resorts to outlandish slapstick when — as we’ve all learned — the ”normal” foibles of Panhandle politics would have sufficed. The story may well have been ripped from the headlines, but judging from the somewhere-Benny Hill-is-crying shenanigans that ensue (nude senators rappel down the capitol building! Short-skirted lobbyists unwittingly pose for Internet crotch shots!), they’re headlines from the Weekly World News. C-
