BETTER OFF 'ED'

Posted on

NBC received an early Christmas present as its critically-worshiped but ratings-hungry rookie Ed (24th) took off in its new Wednesday time slot. The David Letterman-produced dramedy looks far more compatible with The West Wing (6th) and Law & Order (7th) than Aaron Spelling’s now-departed Titans ever did. Another freshman sleeper, The WB’s Gilmore Girls, perked up with a two-part yuletide special; both episodes tied for 86th place, 10 spots higher than the series finished the previous week. Impending schedule moves can’t come too soon for a pair of struggling first-year shows: NBC’s David Alan Grier sitcom DAG (47th), which lags behind ABC’s Geena Davis Show (20th), and the Alphabet’s medical drama Gideon’s Crossing (56th), which is bound for Monday now that Dennis Miller’s football season is over.
