'PEANUTS' ENVY

Posted on

Looks like the blockhead made good: CBS’ 36th airing of A Charlie Brown Christmas (10th) drew 19 million viewers, the cartoon’s biggest audience since 1995. The bad news for CBS is it’ll no longer be the Charlie Brown Station in 2001, as ABC has snatched up the rights to the Peanuts holiday specials. For the first time in a decade, Snoopy also outrated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (17th), which reran on CBS the previous week. Other yuletide offerings, such as CBS’ A Garfield Christmas Special (74th) and Fox’s Olive, the Other Reindeer (89th), met less merry results. Finally, Al Gore again won the popular vote, as combined coverage of his concession (66.2 million viewers) beat George W. Bush’s acceptance (63.4 million).
