You can’t make this stuff up. The Oscar-nominated documentary Genghis Blues, as triumphant and uplifting as Buena Vista Social Club, follows blind San Francisco blues singer Paul Pena as he masters the ancient art of throat singing and gets himself invited to participate in Tuva’s triennial competition. By the time this remarkable man shares a song of friendship with Tuvan superstar Kongar-ol Ondar (described in stature as ”John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jordan rolled into one”), you may have a lump in your throat. A-
