”They had not only the ability in their private life to love each other… but to be able to put it on the screen so it didn’t make you squirm in the seats.” So says writer-director Richard Brooks in the charming 1988 doc Bacall on Bogart, the cherry on top of this dandy compilation of the four ’40s classics they made together. All right, make that three classics (To Have and Have Not, in which Bogart whistles and the earth moves; The Big Sleep, still the best private eye flick of them all; and Key Largo, the last great Warner gangster film) and one mesmerizing oddity (the entertainingly far-fetched Dark Passage). This three-DVD set gathers Snoopy and the gang’s deservedly beloved 1966 Halloween special It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, plus a pair each of delectable Turkey Day (A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and The Mayflower Voyagers) and yuletide ‘toons (A Charlie Brown Christmas and It’s Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown). But the real gift here is 1972’s seldom-seen, still-timely political satire You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown. The package doesn’t offer many extras, but these six helpings of Peanuts make a filling holiday feast. B+
