We gave it a C+

Has filthy rich lawyer Henry Hearst (Gene Hackman) been raping and strangling the young girls of Puerto Rico, or is island cop Victor Benezet (Morgan Freeman) after the wrong man? While you won’t see the answer coming, you may also get a little bored waiting around for it. Based on the 1981 French film Garde á Vue, Under Suspicion pits the two actors against each other in a long-night-of-the-soul talkathon that director Stephen Hopkins’ jerky editing techniques can’t quite spark into sustained life. Freeman and Hackman executive-produced — and who else would give two of today’s finest character stars such meaty parts? Unfortunately, the emphasis here is on the chewing rather than the meal. C+
