From an Anne Heche memoir to ‘MTV:Uncensored,’ the latest publication deals

Posted on

DEALS ON WHEELS Scribner’s Susan Moldow preempted a handful of other publishers for a memoir by news-making movie star Anne Heche. According to industry insiders, the proposal, submitted by William Morris agent Joni Evans, focuses on disturbing events in Heche’s early life … In another deal, Randy Cohen, author of the popular New York Times Magazine column ”The Ethicist,” has reached a low-six-figure deal with Doubleday to turn his edgy advice into a book. Tentatively titled How to Be Good, it will include ”guest ethicists” such as Dave Eggers. ”I call it ‘Dear Abby’ for smart people,” says Doubleday editor in chief Bill Thomas, who plans to publish in January 2002, ”when people are feeling remorseful about holiday excess.” … Pocket Books has just acquired MTV: Uncensored, a 20th-anniversary coffee-table book about the music channel, for a mid-six-figure advance. According to Pocket’s deputy publisher, Kara Welsh, artists as well as ”everybody involved in the channel” will contribute behind-the-scenes oral histories to the book, which is due out next August.
