The 52nd Emmy nominations

”The West Wing” and ”The Sopranos” score big, while Sarah Michelle Gellar is ignored again

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Anyone who thought that the Emmy organizers’ revised voting system might bring a nomination at last for Sarah Michelle Gellar of the long ignored quirky teen bloodsucker series ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was wrong. The academy instead favored the critically acclaimed new hit ”The West Wing” (18 nominations) and that old fave ”The Sopranos” (18 nominations). Thanks to those heavyweights, NBC grabbed 97 nominations and cable giant HBO earned 86. Perhaps the only shocker came in the comedy category, where last year’s winner ”Ally McBeal” was ignored and the series received only three nods altogether.

The 52nd annual Emmy Awards will be held Sept. 10. Let’s hope the show is less predictable than the nominees.
