Why do we genuflect so ridiculously at the altar of celebrity? Sure, it’s a pretty obvious and groan-inducing question on which to hang a book — after all, you don’t have to be a particularly deep thinker to come to the conclusion that fame is a big con. Fortunately, Salon columnist Cintra Wilson, author of A Massive Swelling, also happens to be a brilliant writer with a deliciously warped and blisteringly wiseass take on such topics as the girly-porn appeal of boy bands like ‘N Sync and the crazed-diva insecurity of Barbra Streisand. For the most part, Wilson’s targets are pretty easy ones (Michael Jackson?). But kicking a dog when it’s down can be a hoot when the person doling out the body blows is so hilarious. A-
