Website Review: 'Large Hot Pipe Organ'

We gave it an A

Here’s an instrument that would make Tom Waits drool: an 11-metric-ton, propane-powered, electronically controlled organ with fire-breathing steel pipes that reach 32 feet high and sound like a chorus of cruise-ship horns blowing in mighty unison. The ”Pyro Tango” MP3, recorded live in Germany (one performance was at the opening of the Dutch Embassy in Berlin in 1998), provides an audio glimpse of the Large Hot Pipe Organ (www.lhpo.org), but the organ’s full effect can only be appreciated live: The blasts can be heard a mile away and are intended for an audience of up to 2,000.
