In Peter Moore Smith’s Raveling, the Cain and Abel story of two brothers — and the mystery behind the disappearance of their sister 20 years ago at age 7 — is as original as it is absorbing. When the younger brother, Pilot (a schizophrenic bum), suffers a psychotic episode, he’s treated at the hospital where older brother Eric (a distinguished neurosurgeon) works, and Pilot almost immediately begins accusing Eric of their sister’s death. The hospital shrink, who also happens to be Eric’s lover, can’t shake the belief that perhaps Pilot isn’t as crazy as he sounds. Slowly, almost hypnotically, the strands of the family tragedy interweave toward a resolution that’s satisfying on both a narrative and moral level. A-
