The International ”Stand By Me” Club
Stand & Deliver
An outgrowth of a British-based fan group, the International ”Stand By Me” Club website (ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/pasquier) is ”dedicated to popularising the concepts of interpersonal solidarity contained in a single chart-topping song.” In other words, these blokes are bonkers for the 1961 classic by Ben E. King. The site provides the club’s history, a newsletter, lyrics, and a want list of unobtained versions. Don’t rush to send them your John Lennon copy, though. They’ve already got it, along with hours of various other renditions — including a Led Zeppelin romp and a cover by Cassius Clay — available on audiotape if you join up. A convincing argument against having too much free time? At least it’s not the International ”It’s Hip to Be Square” site.
