Brit magazine writer Anna Maxted’s debut novel Getting Over It will naturally draw quick comparisons to Bridget Jones’s Diary, since neurotic-but-twitty twenty-soemthing Helen Bradshaw has a low-rent editorial job, a hostile boss who makes her dress up as a tampon, a gaggle of quirky but loyal friends, a self-absorbed mother, and a complicated London love life that involves embarrassing amounts of liquor. But what separates this smart, poignant tale is the ”getting over it” (”it” being the death of Helen’s emotionally distant father) and how the reader’s growing involvement parallels Helen’s recognition of her repressed grief. At times Maxted reaches too hard for the clever line, but more often she delivers a deft, on-target balance f humor and heart. B+
